How to read YouTube live chat aloud in OBS
By Debarshi Parasar · Updated November 5, 2026
When you are in the middle of a game, you can't keep reading chat. A chat reader speaks each message for you and your viewers. This guide shows how to set that up with CHATDOOM and OBS. The same steps work for Twitch and Kick chat.
What you need
- A Windows PC with OBS Studio (version 28 or newer for the best audio option)
- Your YouTube live link, or your Twitch or Kick channel name
- CHATDOOM for Windows
Step 1: Connect your chat
- Install CHATDOOM and open it.
- On the Connect page, paste your YouTube live link, or type your Twitch or Kick channel name.
- Press Connect. You don't need to sign in just to read chat.
Messages now appear on the Live chat page, and CHATDOOM starts reading them aloud. You can connect several platforms at once and hear them in one feed.
Step 2: Choose a voice
Open the Voice page. Pick a voice for each kind of message, then set the speed and volume. Neural voices sound best and need an internet connection. Windows voices work offline.
Step 3: Add the voice to OBS
- Keep CHATDOOM running. It can be minimised.
- In OBS, go to Sources, press +, and choose Application Audio Capture.
- Pick CHATDOOM from the list.
This sends only CHATDOOM's sound to your stream, so you can set its volume on its own. If you don't see that source, use Desktop Audio instead, and wear headphones so your microphone doesn't pick up the voice.
Step 4: Choose what gets read
A busy chat can be a lot to listen to. On the Moderation page you can filter out links, commands, bots and repeated messages, and add blocked words. On the Voice page, you can read every message or only paid messages. Skipped messages stay visible in grey on the Live chat page.
Step 5: Show chat on screen (optional)
- In CHATDOOM, open the OBS overlays page and copy the Chat address.
- In OBS, go to Sources, press +, and choose Browser.
- Paste the address into URL, and set the width to 520 and the height to 760.
Messages slide in with a coloured tag for each platform, then fade away.
If something doesn't work
- No sound on stream: check that CHATDOOM is open before you go live, and that the audio source isn't muted in OBS.
- Echo on stream: if you use Desktop Audio, wear headphones.
- The overlay is blank: overlay addresses only work on the PC running CHATDOOM, and only while it is open. If the port was busy, CHATDOOM shows new addresses, so copy them again.
- The overlay resets: in the Browser source, untick "Shutdown source when not visible" and "Refresh browser when scene becomes active".
